Matte paint, carbon fiber, carbon-ceramic braking systems—there’s no shortage of expensive features when flipping through the options list of certain luxury vehicles. However, it seems that wasn’t quite enough, as BMW has decided to add special center-lock wheels to its catalog.
The wheels alone cost just under $7,000. But what’s truly outrageous is the conversion kit, which costs nearly $13,000 with all the accompanying accessories. This brings the total to nearly $20,000. And since we’re talking in U.S. dollars, that translates to approximately $28,000 CAD with the current exchange rate.
This type of wheel is primarily used in motorsports, as it allows for quick wheel changes when tires wear out. However, some manufacturers offer it on race-ready production models, such as the legendary Porsche 911 GT3 RS.
For the average driver, this technology makes little to no difference. In fact, it may even complicate things for local mechanics who might not have the right tools for center-lock wheels. To be honest, this setup is mainly a way for owners to show off at car shows. It’s best seen as the cherry on top.
For now, BMW offers only one wheel model with 10 spokes. The front wheels measure 19 inches, while the rear wheels are slightly larger at 20 inches. In terms of width, the front wheels are 275 mm wide, while the rear ones reach 285 mm. The conversion kit is available for BMW’s 2, 3, and 4 Series in their M Performance versions.
Personally, I find the wheels very stylish, and they certainly add character to any car. However, at over $28,000 CAD, it’s something to think twice about—especially for a car that ranges in price from $82,000 to $160,000, depending on the version.
