While most automakers are downsizing engines in favor of turbochargers or electric motors, BMW is firmly committed to keeping the V8 alive for as long as possible.
What makes this news even more interesting is that it doesn’t stem from rumors or speculation. The information comes directly from Frank Weber, BMW’s Head of Research and Development. In a recent interview with Automotive News, Weber explicitly stated that the Bavarian automaker has no intention of abandoning its V8 anytime soon. He acknowledged that enthusiasts love the sound and driving dynamics of a V8. While a different type of engine might match its power on paper, it wouldn’t provide the same driving experience—and that’s what truly matters.
BMW has been producing V8 engines for decades. At one point, even the M3 was powered by a V8. Today, this engine is reserved for larger models, starting with the 5 Series for sedans and the X5 for SUVs.
BMW’s 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 delivers anywhere from 523 to 738 horsepower, depending on the model. It is renowned for its sound and exceptionally smooth power delivery. Interestingly, this same V8 can now be found under the hood of certain Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) models as well.
What makes BMW’s V8 even more appealing is that it is paired with a plug-in hybrid system. This allows for fuel efficiency in all-electric mode for short daily trips, while still offering the thrilling roar of a V8 for weekend drives.
BMW isn’t alone in this mindset. In a past conversation with someone from Ford, I heard a similar stance—the Mustang’s V8 will remain for as long as possible.
For BMW, the V8 is more than just an engine—it defines the soul and character of the vehicles it powers. Just look at Mercedes-Benz, which has replaced V8 and even V6 engines with turbocharged four-cylinder units in several AMG models. These new versions lack the same appeal they once had. BMW seems determined not to make the same mistake.
